It’s the holidays! The time of year for families to gather together to celebrate traditions, share old memories, and make new ones. This year, as you surround yourself with family and friends, both two-legged and four-legged alike, remember there are millions of dogs in shelters, patiently waiting for a family of their own. For some, this won’t be their first, second, or even their EIGHTH Christmas without a family of their own.
It’s our Christmas wish that every dog in rescue would find a home for the holidays, so we’ve selected 12 special dogs from around the country that have been overlooked time and time again. Some are senior dogs, some have special needs, and some are passed over for reasons we simply can’t understand – but, they all deserve to spend the holidays with a family of their own.
We’re calling this the 12 Dogs of Christmas! The Dogington Post along with our friends at Halo® Purely for Pets® have joined forces to introduce you to 12 needy dogs in hopes that they’ll finally get noticed…and maybe get a home for the holidays!
Name of Rescue Organization: The Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League
How long at shelter/rescue: 1 year
Type/Size/Sex: Great Dane (possible mix), large 140-pounds, Female
When Sophie originally came into a local shelter, she was very fearful and did not understand why she was there. Mid-Atlantic Great Dane rescue quickly jumped to her rescue and brought her in. She has had a rough start to life and has had a number of homes. She started off with a backyard breeder that just wanted her out. She came into Mid-Atlantic very broken and confused, she didn’t understand who she should trust, or who she should be afraid of. Quick movements scared her, lifting your hand too quickly and she’d drop to the floor. If you raised your voice she would cower and run. But, after being in her foster home for almost a year now, she is starting to understand that not everyone in the world are awful. She is very trusting and loyal and wants nothing more than to please her humans.
Christmas is getting closer, weather is getting colder, and Sophie wants a home! Sophie is such a sweetheart, she has learned to love everyone she meets. Now that she trusts her foster family, she is great with strangers – anybody can walk right up to her and pet her. She loves being loved and given affection. She has learned to tolerate water, nail clippings, and some dogs. Sophie will now step right into the bathtub, only fusses a little when we clip her nails AND has learned to share. Want to bring in the new year with a new best friend?! Sophie is your pooch!
Sophie submitted her Christmas list to her foster mom, and all she asked for was a forever home. Sophie has been a very good girl this year, and Santa made sure she was on the nice list. Can you make her Christmas wish come true?
Likes: Sophie is a couch potato that loves to snuggle with her humans. All she wants to do is love you, and spend time with you. She loves exploring the great outdoors. Her favorite activity is riding in the car and of course eating.
Dislikes: Sophie gets along great with other animal and dogs as long as they don’t become aggressive or give her attitude.
Special Considerations: Sophie would do best as an only dog, or another dog with a similar personality to hers (which is a couch potato). She tolerates dogs until they give her attitude, or are aggressive towards her. She lives with other various animals and does great. She lets the cat rub against her and enjoys every moment of her time with her foster family.
Sophie’s Perfect Family: The perfect family for Sophie would be someone that is patient and understands a “broken” dog. She is great, very friendly, very loving, and doesn’t have a mean bone in her body. But she is very, very timid when she isn’t comfortable with her family. Her family is everything to her, and she needs someone that loves being with her humans on the couch, in bed or just going for a nice car ride.
Sophie will soon face another Christmas without a family all her own.
Does Sophie seem like the perfect fit for your family? Here’s how to begin the adoption process:
Anyone that is interested in Sophie can fill out an application with Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League at www.magdrl.org. There is an adoption fee that goes directly to help other dogs in need.
The Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League, Inc. (MAGDRL) adopts to the following states only: MD, DE, Washington DC, VA, WV, NJ, South Central & Eastern PA, and NY. Because of the home check requirement, they do not adopt outside of the areas mentioned above.
All of the dogs that come through Mid-Atlantic’s rescue program are spayed or neutered and fully vetted before being adopted.
Will Sophie finally find her forever with you?
