Description

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a popular breed of long yet low to the ground type of dog that originated in Wales. It belongs to the Herding breed family which is admired for their exceptional ability to control the movements of other animals. Cardigan Welsh Corgis have been bred to become cattle dogs and all-purpose companions. Their short double coat is thick and weather-resistant underneath, and quite longer and coarser in the outside. Its colors usually include sable, red, brindle, fawn, blue merle, black and brindle, and black and tan sometimes with white markings.

Height and Weight

The male members of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi breed normally stand a height of 10 to 13 in at the withers, and weigh 25 to 30 lbs. Bitches, on the other hand, commonly have a height of 10 to 13 in, and a weight of 25 to 30 lbs.

Temperament

Cardigan Welsh Corgi2

Corgis, in general, are sturdy, very intelligent and obedient dogs that are eager to please their family owners. They are known to be high-spirited and very adorable to be with. The breed is dedicated, loving, and reliable, though can be rather wary of strangers. Socializing them when young is highly recommended. Corgis are highly active, and devoted little fellows. The breed is usually considerate with children. They tend to be protective; thereby making them good guard dogs. Corgis relate well with other pets, but can be quite combative and territorial with other canines. They have the propensity to herd people by means of nipping at their heels. Handlers have to train them not to do such act. Corgi pets love daily physical activities, and tend to feel most at home when owners are around.

Grooming

Corgis generally have minimal coat care requirements. Brushing can be done once a week, and bathing needs to be carried out only when very necessary. Because the breed is an average, seasonal shedder, vacuum cleaning may be necessary on a daily basis.

Health Concerns

Members of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi breed are generally long-lived. In fact, they have an average lifespan of 10 to 12 years. Nonetheless, like any other canine, the breed is also known to be plagued by a few health complications. These include weight gain, spinal problems, thyroid disorders, chronic heart diseases, and eye defects.

Best Environment

Corgi pets are capable of adapting to either city life or countryside living. They only need to be given sufficient exercise and a lot of human attention to keep them feel secure and comfortable. They can thrive even without a yard so long as they get to be taken out for walks every day. Vigorous play sessions and some herding exercises can already be great for them.
