Description

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, also popularly referred to as Cav or Cavie, is an adorable breed of small dog that originated in England. The breed has been bred for the purpose of companionship. Temperament

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are considered to be a very curious, and playful breed of dog. They are affectionate and like to cuddle up on cushions or their owner’s lap. They are highly patient and tend to be eager to please their masters. The breed is also known to bond very well with children and other canines.

More often than not, Cavs are capable of readily adapting to almost any kind of environment, location, and family. The breed is not shy around larger dogs. They are excellent with people across all ages, too. They make very versatile pets. In addition, the breed is also active, energetic, and sporting. They like to chase almost anything that moves. They have very strong hunting instinctual behaviors; threatening birds and other small animals. Cavs also do not make excellent watchdogs for they generally have the propensity to regard strangers as friends.

Grooming

Cavs are quite easy to groom. Because the breed is a medium shedder and their hair tends to mat,  regular brushing is important. To be exact, brushing their hair twice or thrice a week is highly necessary. Their ears also need to be checked as well as cleaned regularly.

Health Concerns

Like any other breed, Cavs are also prone to several dog health problems. Some of the genetic conditions they are likely to suffer are the Mitral-valve disease and syringomyelia. Other health issues include diabetes, canine hip dysplasia, eye problems, and episodic falling. Nonetheless, the breed has an average lifespan of 10 to 14 years.

Best Environment

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can well thrive to almost any kind of living environment. They make admirable apartment dogs. Exercise is very vital for Cav’s heart. However, long jogs are not a requirement. In fact, the breed can do even without a spacious backyard. Daily long walks, nonetheless, is important.
