I think a memorial posting like this is a perfect place to continue with my never-ending quest to save other pet owners the same loss and grief I felt after the loss of my beloved Sweetie Brown. Please read it:

A Warning to Dog Owners About Wildflowers

I have figured out the reason my little dog Sweetie died so suddenly two years ago, and I’m bringing it up now in hopes of saving someone else’s “best friend” and constant companion. It seems that there are a huge number of wildflowers in Oregon, that while pretty, are also toxic to pets. When the man came to pick up her body for cremation, he made the comment that they get a lot of pets that die suddenly from toxic foliage. This didn’t quite register at first until the grief had somewhat lessened. I finally remembered that the day she got fatally sick, I had seen her eating the flower and stalk of a yellow wildflower that had spread to her kennel. I Googled “toxic yellow Oregon wildflowers,” and came up with a minimum of at least three varieties of the wildflowers posted that are currently in my “yard.” Where I rented, the landlord had not mowed around my mobile home for three summers…it’s essentially a field, not a yard. In that time, multiple wildflowers had started to spread and reseed. Not all of them are yellow of course, but those were the kind I saw her eat. Three summers ago, the landlords’ female lab died over the course of a week, from something that affected her liver. What is a lingering illness in a large dog, is sudden-death in a small one like mine. I firmly believe this is why BOTH dogs died so unexpectedly, and there was nothing that could have been done for either of them to prevent it once they ate the foliage. For the sake of your own fur babies, don’t nurture wildflowers until you know what your pet might eat… ALL dogs eat grass and various foliage. If you take them on nature hikes, make sure you know what they are snacking on. This may apply to outdoor cats as well, but they will be more difficult to monitor. If you have a vision of lots of colorful wildflowers in your yard or field, find out if they are toxic to your pets! Don’t plant them if any in the seed packet are toxic.
