In any state across the country, traveling with a small child that isn’t properly restrained is illegal – but only New Jersey carries these same laws for pets.

Did you know that 98% of dogs aren’t properly restrained during travel? Not only is this unsafe for you, the driver, but your dog faces injury if not restrained. Check out the infographic below for some safe travel tips – and a few facts that might change some minds about just tossing the dog in the backseat and taking off.

I was wrong…not all restraints are bad. But just like child car seats, it’s important to choose the right one.

There is NO pet restraint law in New Jersey. I don’t know where people get their information, but you’re entirely wrong. The law says that it is illegal to inhumanely transport an animal. It says nothing of restraining them. Here is the link that should put that miserable rumor to rest.

For travel in the car, I have a special strap that is hooked to my dog’s harness & snaps in where the seatbelt snaps. 100% effective.

Jen is right. Car harnesses and restraints have recently been proven to be very dangerous and are worse than no restraints at all. I was very surprised but they’ve proven it with crash test dog dummies.

Great article. It is truly informative. I, myself is a dog lover. i take my dog almost everywhere. And securing his safety is very important when we travel. i highly recommend this site – dkc.ae – you can actually learn a lot in terms of travel care for your pets.

  5. This is so true! People take special care of restraining their children in cars, why wouldn’t we do the same for our pets. We’re a huge fan of infographics and this one is great! Thanks for sharing!

I entirely agree that pet travel safety is important, my dogs go everywhere with me including work. But promoting restraints that have been proven ineffective is misleading at best. The following link gives the detail of the study that found a 100% failure rate for restraint harnesses.
