Michigan Police Shoot, Kill Puppy in His Own Backyard

Rock

At around midnight on Saturday night/Sunday morning, Redford Township Police shot and killed 10-month old ‘Rock,’ a Labrador Retriever/Pit Bull mix, in his own backyard.

In pursuit of a suspect, police entered the backyard of Bianca Alakson and Ryan Showalter, despite the “Beware of Dog” sign clearly posted on the couple’s fence.

One officer said the dog charged him and, fearing for his life, he fired once at the dog. He says Rock continued toward him, so he fired a second, fatal shot.

When Ryan Showalter confronted police, frantically asking why they killed his dog, he was handcuffed and arrested for interfering with a police investigation.

“I was breaking down hysterically in the back seat of the cop car, crying,” he explained to Detroit’s WDIV News. Showalter says he only wanted to know what happened to his dog.

Friends and neighbors say Rock was a friendly dog, nice to everyone, including strangers.

“He was just my baby.” said Alakson.

First, I think cops killings family dogs is wrong, period. However, they said the dog that was shot “Rock” was a 10 mo. puppy and that their female was expecting a litter of puppies from “Rock”. Wonder how young the momma dog is? Extremely ignorant and irresponsible backyard breeder couple. No their dog shouldn’t have been shot and that’s such a tragedy. But the other tragedy is more unwanted puppies on the way. You never know both sides of a story.

This is so stupid… I may not be educated but I do know that they needed a warrant… but the thing about the dog “charging” is EXTREMELY common… my family owns 4 dogs and when anyone comes up our driveway they run at the car and bark… they are just protecting their land… their was no reason for that cop to shoot that dog not once but TWICE!!! I mean seriously… that is really stupid… I agree that all cops need dog/animal training to use in the field… I would also like to note that the dog was 10 MONTHS OLD.. I mean how in the world is the puppy supposed to not run at a stranger that he probably wants to play with??? And this lab/pit mix bullshit is so stupid.. I mean the only thing for that to even be their is to justify the killing of the dog… My dog is a boxer mix and he has never bitten and/or attacked anyone except for when he attacks your face with kisses… And finally the point about the owner being arrested for wanting to know what happened to his dog??? I would going for blood if someone shot any four of our dogs, especially my dog… that is all…

If the officer had any idea that the dog was growling, showing his teeth or barking then yeah he had the right to be afraid but all he said was that the dog was coming toward him or in his words “charging” him wow. The dog was running to greet him because the cop was in the dogs yard. I would sue in a heartbeat. More or less you shoot my dog I will shoot you. Plain and simple.

Let me begin this comment with stating that I am an animal lover, and particularly a dog person. What happened is horrible. However, I can’t believe some of the comments I’m reading…you guys are ridiculous! First off let me state what I agree: there is an increase in the unnecessary shooting of dogs in this country. Additionally, police are abusing their power more and more, I do agree with that too. HOWEVER, this is where this conversation gets absurd and you guys are just using whatever little knowledge you have of the law/your ridiculous views on gun sense to put you opinion in.

First off, the shooting of this particular dog is justified in my eyes. You guys are saying that the cop was on the property illegally without a warrant? You’re a moron. That law is specific to unlawful search and seizures, they cannot search your house for anything incriminating against you without a warrant. Additionally, they can’t just step onto your property for no reason at all. HOWEVER, he was in pursuit of a suspect that was most likely hopping fences and hiding in someones backyard. Your going to be a liberal douche and tell the cop he can’t come onto your property when there might be a criminal hiding in your shed?! …Start thinking before you speak.

Secondly – as someone who works on the streets and has first experience dealing with this kind of situation on a daily basis, let me tell you that this police officer was not a “shooting happy trigger finger” cop – he saw an animal charging at him and feared for his life. Most of you have no idea what it’s like to work on the streets, person or animal the goal is to go home safely at the end of the day.I’m not a murderer and I don’t hate animals, but I’m not going to DIE when I’m at work caring for the public if I don’t have to. When it comes down to it, its him/her vs me in a life or death situation like these, and it’s not going to be me.

Nothings going to happen to the police officer because he didn’t do anything wrong, he had full capacity to shoot the dog, and full capacity to be on the property. Anyone who says this has to do with gun sense in America is a moron and needs to get an education.

I will further agree with however, that if the home owner shot the cop, he/she would be in the right as well. An unidentified stranger was on the property who just shot their dog, I wouldn’t even run down stairs I would start shooting from inside because I would have no idea what’s going on. When you read something on the internet, use your brain and think about it from all aspects not just what you think is right because when it comes down to it, you don’t know what you would have done.

Robyn, if he had allowed the dog to bite him and it bit an artery yes it could have been a life or death situation…which could result in him DYING as I said.

Additionally, whenever an officer fires his weapon it becomes a crime scene. Paperwork needs to be filed, and an investigation needs to ensue. There were other officers who were involved with the pursuit that continued in their efforts to search for him. So yes, he was that important, but this particular officers priorities changed when he fired his weapon.

I don’t agree with him arresting the home owner, but again I don’t know the specifics of how the dog owner reacted…exhibit A of why people need to educate themselves on an issue before they start typing away on a keyboard.

You are obviously not a very well educated person, and most definitely a liberal, because instead of retaliating my comment (which has all legitimate points) in an educated fashion, …you retaliate with name calling. Yes everyone hates police officers because they’re “scumbags and they fuck with people,” until you need a cop to save you. Then they are heroes.

Additionally, like I stated, you weren’t in the situation. You were not there, and you’ve never been in this situation, so therefore you cannot attempt to put me down, and make me look like I’m in the wrong, because your points were all about biases, and ridiculous beliefs, not facts.

Robyn, I as well worked out of a NYC hospital. I didn’t state statistics, I stated the possibility of it occurring, albeit low, the officer made a split second decision in that he didn’t want to find out if the dog would get his popliteal artery and then possibly his carotid. Also I was not there, its just that those procedures occur nationwide and is pretty common knowledge.

To make this short and simple i agree with dan learn your laws and what the police are ale to do or not do the next thing is the owns had a BEWARE OF DOG
sign posted on their yard this shows that they believe the dog will bite NOT THAT THERE IS A DOG IN THE YARD.If you want to let people you know you have a dog post “dog in yard” not BEWARE this word simple states you believe your dog will bite or attack if you enter the yard. There fore just on this the officer had every right to protect him self from the dog the officer was in pursuit of someone that will more then likely hurt you or had hurt someone that was more harmful then just going around the yard and wait till later to get him. For police our safety comes first then his and his partner if at anytime he felt his life was in danger he has the right to shot JUST LIKE WE DO.
So yes the loss of the dog is sad and I would be very upset that my dog was shot but if I was dumb enough to let people know my dog bites then that killing is on me not the person who shot him. Next fuck my grammar if you dont understand it reread it till you do I write like i talk so fuck you petty people who worry about that shit in a blog.

absolutely right on your statements, Daniela. BEWARE indicates there not only is a dog on property but that there is a possibility you could be at risk if you enter. It really is intended to keep the bad guys not the cops out of the yard. DOG in yard signs at my gate and by the front door. My dogs have a doggie door but sleep with me, and at times will get up in the middle of the night to go out and relieve themselves. I live at the first end of a subdivision with a green belt right next door. It would be very easy for a perp to hop the fence from the greenbelt area in to my back yard so I keep a very bright light on so I can see what is going on and so if there is a runner, the cops can find him/her. I have no doubt that my dogs would raise a ruckus and alert but probably not advance unless it was to put themselves between me and perceived danger. They are dogs and not expected to analyze a situation before reacting. Officers pull your pepper spray and let me fix that problem a lot easier than surgery to remove a bullet or deal with the death of one of my loyal companions.

The cop had his adrenaline pumping from chasing the suspect, and when he saw the dog, he got scared. It’s plain and simple. Sure the dog may have been running towards him. The dog was a puppy at 10-months-old. The dog probably thought it was some kind of game! What I do NOT believe is that once the dog was shot the first time, that it kept coming. I think the officer shot the dog, saw it was not dead, was afraid of possible repurcussions of wounding an obviously gentle dog (which could be proven because the dog was still alive), so he decided to shoot it again to make sure it was dead. There is a difference between a dog CHARGING at you in an attack mode and a dog playfully BOUNDING at you. This officer panicked. Even if there is an investigation, I’m sure he won’t be found at fault. Police officers need to be better trained at how to deal with companion animals in situations like these.

or even more sinister… what if he did it feeling that since it was a dog that he could do it and get away with it. and instead of fear being the driving cause it was that he saw the dog as a problem that he didnt want to deal with.

In the last 6 mo. to year. This type of police–vs–family dog is happening
all to often. A lot of canine owners have a dog in house/yard as a protector or warning system, esp. after dark. A chase, usually at fast pace
would certainly startle the dog-who was in his own territory. So, the greeting from the dog was a normal response to the after-dark entre by a stranger. One story recently even had the police shot and kill a dog tied
up in his own backyard. My recommendation–maybe all police officers should
take animal/dog care training,,,not just the K-9 officers.

Not only that, but the owner gets arrested just because he was trying to find out what happened to his dog. I would be very mad too if that was my dog. I really think that cop should berepremanded because there was a “BEWARE OF DOG” sign on the couple’s fence. The poor dog was only 10 months old. He did NOT deserve to get shot. The dog reacted as it normally would with a stranger. Something really needs to be done about that cop and/or police department. I took the inclusion of the dog’s breed mix to further emphasize the blatant hatred displayed against the pit bull breed. Rock does have distinctive pit bull looks to him, mixed with his lab looks.

Just saying it does not matter the breed he was in his own back yard and this cop shot not once but twice.

Thank you for noticing that. A puppy is a puppy whether it’s Poodle or a Pit, a Basset or a Mastiff. AND no one has the right to kill it in it’s own yard.

  33. Why couldn’t trigger the happy jerk have take a minute to be sure of the dogs intentions? What would that have hurt ? That sweet dog would still be alive with his family !! My opinion is that cops are getting too trigger happy when dealing with animals.

POLICE OFFICERS ARE A BUNCH OF MURDERS WITH A LICENSE TO KILL, AND THEN THEY BLAME THE VICTIMS FOR THERE FREAKING CRIMES, IF SOMEBODY KILL A POLICE DOG ALL HELL COMES DOWN ON THE FREAKING MURDER, BUT WEND THE POLICE OFFICERS KILL OUR FAMILY MEMBERS THEY GET A REWORD FOR THERE KILLING, IF YOU CALL THE POLICE THEY WILL COME AND DESTROYED YOUR FAMILY, AND NO ONE HOLDEM ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE CRIME THEY PERPETRATED AGAIN YOUR FAMILY, THEY NEED TO HOLD THIS BASTARD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR CRIMES BC THEY ARE DANGERS TO OUR SOCIETY, APPLY THE LAW EQUAL TO EVERYBODY, IF THEY KILL ANY FAMILY MEMBER PUT THEM IN JAIL, AND IF THERE DOGS POLICE K9 (OFFICER) GET KILL PUT THEM IN JAIL TO, I DON’T CARE WHO IS THE MURDER MAKE THEM PAID FOR THERE CRIME!!!!!!

This is just ridiculous. Of course the dog would “Bark and Jump” seeing a stranger in his own back yard. The officer DID NOT NEED TO SHOOT this dog. SOMETHING has to be done about this problem.

  38. If this “public servant” reacts this way to a 10 month old puppy IN HIS OWN FENCED IN BACK YARD, then how will they react to a full grown suspect when they are confronted… shoot first and ask questions later? I, personally, don’t want a loose cannon on the streets in my home town. Suppose it had been a child? Sounds far fetched? It is only a small step from one to the other. Young boy slips out in the middle of the night to play with his new dog. Cop hears a rustle behind him, turns and shoots. Don’t tell me it cannot happen. This officer needs to be reprimanded and needs remedial training, because they obviously cannot control their situation on the street without resorting to deadly force. THEN the officer needs to make restitution… if that’s even possible. Losing a pet is like losing a family member to some folks. It may not be much, but that’s my honest opinion.

the police shot and killed a pit bull running away from the police, poor little baby was shot more then once, the story the cops told was a lie, while trying to save the dog the Vet said the dog was shot running away because of the wounds on the dog. Come to find out the police officer has used her gun before when it was not needed. This happened on Staten Island New York at the park, the pit bull was not even in the dog fight dog that was the reason they were there, yes she was on a leash but got scared and pulled away from her owner to run home. My son was friends with the boyfriend of the owner. My son’s pit is the sweetest dog there is and you can bet your life on it if some finger happy cop was to shoot her there would be a war like no other. I’m very sorry for their lost.

Ok Folks … Don’t like COPS murdering family pets that are in the “Safety” of their own back yards ? Do Something !! Here is the e-mail for the Governor of Michigan … Let your voices be heard ! EACH time an innocent pet is murdered , get the governor of that state’s e-mail address and raise Hell … It’s the ONLY way we can stop this brutality …
Here is the e-mail address for Michigan : somgovweb.state.mi.us/GovRelations/ShareOpinion.aspx

    • I sent a detailed statement to the Governor and do hope many more will also. There needs to be justice served for the brutal killing of this dog and the sadness the family is feeling.

Thank you for the email for the Gov. to complain about these dog killings.
As a person depending on a service dog, I am terrified some shoot-happy cop will shoot him.
I am grateful to the many sane, responsible officers out there, but boy this really tarnishes their image and makes people forget what great work they do for us.
