Police Shot Two Puppies While Responding to Burglary Alarm

A Houston dog owner wants answers after officers were investigating a burglary at his home when police shot two puppies, a 6-month old and a 14-month old Akita, that were secured in their fenced backyard.

Houston police were responding to a burglary alarm at the home of Carnelius Allen when, they say, Allen’s two dogs charged them, leaving them no choice but to fire.

Allen, who was not home at the time of the break-in, told KPRC that police called him to say they’d been dispatched to his home to investigate a break-in.

“(The officer) asked me was it OK for them to secure the area. So, I said, ‘Yes, it’s fine, but please be aware there are two dogs in the backyard.’ So, he said, ‘OK.  I’ll let the team know,'” Allen explained.

When Allen returned home, police made no mention of the shooting. It wasn’t until his 5-year old son discovered the puppies bleeding in the backyard.

“I’m asking them, ‘What should I do?’ They’re, like, ‘Well, we’re basically just here for the report of people breaking in. Yeah, we shot your dogs, but we don’t know specifically what to tell you,'” Allen told KPRC of his conversation with police.

Allen brought both dogs to an emergency veterinarian. The youngest, a 6-month old puppy, had been shot in the leg. The 14-month old pup was shot in the head. Miraculously, both pups were still alive.

Unable to afford the estimated $15,000 required to treat the pups, Allen surrendered both animals to BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions who assured him the dogs would not be euthanized.

Both dogs are being transferred to an Akita rescue in New Jersey to receive the care they need. Both dogs have long roads to recovery – the youngest has already had a leg amputation – but, both are miraculously in stable condition.

Giving his dogs up was a heartbreaking decision for Allen who said, “those dogs were my life.” But, with no way to provide the emergency care they needed, he felt he had no choice, that it was the only way to save the dogs he loved.

Allen and his attorney are reviewing potential legal options.

Another gun shooting gun happy cops story. I hate the John Wayne attitude that just because they have the right to carry find they need to shoot something or someone and they are so chicken that they did not even tell the owner they shot their dogs. What sick ba*stards.

They are worse then a__ h__ . they need to pay for all vet bills out of their own pockets, no job until vet bill is paid. They need to be retrained.they can use pepper spray on people do they can do it on dogs. This is animal abuse to leave them there to die. They would shot you if you did it to there dog or family. They need to be held for the crime they did. Thought we was to get better but we are going backwards. Nothing is safe around the a.h. any more. I would not call them for anything, I don't trust them.

Yep! This just happened in mpls a few days ago also! Cop lied and said they were coming after him. The video showed they weren't and he jumped back over the fence once shooting both in the head and body a few times each. Cop shouldn't have been in their yard at all!!

This is getting totally out of control, these were puppies, not killers, they probably just wanted to play but the police seem to be taking their frustrations out on the animals because of other things they have no control of like all the shootings going on everywhere!
    This needs to STOP NOW!!!!'

Please don't start calling these policemen "pigs" or "dumb assholes"! We've had enough of that negative, hateful talk! I'm upset that they shot the Akita puppies and left them bleeding in the backyard but it was dark, they probably didn't realize they were puppies but just barking and running toward them, and they had a job to do which was catch the burglars. Maybe something positive can be done to help the owner raise the money for their care and get them back!

The girl in mpls had a go find me because it hit the news and raised enough to cover the bills. I think the police need to start paying for there own dang mistakes! They wouldn't be so lucky if it were my dogs! I would be doing everything I could to make sure it never happened again!

Then why did they not tell the man about them shorting them and let a KID find them!!! Also the guy said they were back there he more then likely said I have to PUPS back there!! So the whole "it was dark" whatever! There is no reason for this at all!!!! Then they have the nerve to basically just say yeah we shit your dogs don't know what to tell you! How can you not see this is them being heartless assholes! Do you have kids? How would you like your kids finding the dog they live shot buy someone who is supposed to be there to keep them safe?!?!? Delusional is what you are if you can not see there is way to much of this going on!!!! IT IS ANIMAL ABUSE!!!!! Plain and simple
