Description

The Scottish Terrier, also called as Scottie, is a trendy breed of sturdy little dog that originated in Scotland. It belongs to the Terrier breed family which is remarkable for their distinguished endearing and lively personality. Scotties have been bred to hunt animals like fox and vermin. Their wiry double coat is hard outside but soft underneath. The breed normally comes in wheaten, black, or brindle color, while others have additional white markings on the chest.

Height and Weight

Both the male and female members of the Scottish Terrier breed commonly stand a height of 10 to 11 in at the withers, and weigh 19 to 23 lbs.

Temperament

Scotties, in general, are hardy, lovable pets. They are proud, intelligent, and charming. They are known to be alert and brave; making them excellent watchdogs. Scotties are also playful and lively. They like to roam, dig, and play ball games. The breed is also independent and home-loving; making them amiable house pets. Because they have the propensity to become stubborn, they need firm but calm owners who can establish effective leadership over them.

Grooming

Scotties are quite a high-maintenance breed. Although they are not heavy shedders, they require extensive and even costly coat care. They need to be combed at least thrice a week to keep their hair from matting. Cleaning their beard every day is also important. Professional services are highly recommended for proper shaping by clipping at least every quarter.

Health Concerns

Some of the common health issues associated with Scotties include skin allergies, cramps, hemophilia, cancer, jaw problems, and liver disease. Nevertheless, with proper care, nutrition, and exercise, the breed can live for as long as 11 to 13 years.

Best Environment

Members of the Scottie breed generally require a spacious yard space to romp around. To keep them from unwarranted incidents that involve chasing and biting, secure fencing is highly recommended. They are best suited to sleep indoors and they do not thrive well to areas with hot climates. Because of their small size, the breed usually makes versatile homemakers who can do well in a well-ventilated apartment or country home. To make the dog happier and calmer, activities like games of fetch, ball games, long walks, and off leash loitering in a fenced location can be done.
