Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has confirmed that an alien character in the movie is based on late star Carrie Fisher’s beloved dog, Gary.
Hitting already-sold-out theaters worldwide on December 14, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is expected to top box office charts as the most highly anticipated film of the year.
And, with a release date just about 2 weeks prior to the one year anniversary of beloved actress and Star Wars icon Carrie Fisher’s death, it’s no surprise filmmakers found a clever way to pay tribute to the star – by creating an adorable alien character in her canine sidekick, Gary the Frenchie’s likeness!
On Tuesday, an eagle-eyed fan noticed the tiny canine-esque character in a still image from a scene in the upcoming film printed in Empire Magazine. Recognizing the resemblance to Gary, the fan took to Twitter to ask the source:

To fans’ surprise, Rian Johnson answered:

Gary, Fisher’s beloved French Bulldog sidekick and emotional support dog now resides with her former assistant, Corby McCoin. You can keep up with all things Gary by checking out his Instagram account or, look for him on the silver screen, in a galaxy far, far away!
