Description

The Toy Fox Terrier, also known as the American Toy Terrier or simply Amertoy, is a breed of small, muscular dog that originated in United States. It belongs to the toy breed family which is remarkable for their distinct personality and excellent hunting skills. Toy Fox Terriers have been initially bred to hunt rats, but later become more like of a reliable family companion. Their short, thick coat usually comes in a tri-color pattern with white as its predominant shade, along with black and tan markings.

Height and Weight

Both the male and female members of the Toy Fox Terrier breed normally stand a height of 10 in at the withers, and weigh between 3 ½ to 7 lbs.

Temperament

Toy Fox Terriers, in general, are diminutive yet robust terriers that are known to be tough and bright. They are an athletic pet that are recognized for their being active, spirited, and curious. The breed is also alert, quick, and inquisitive. These Amertoy pets are known to be pleasant, sensitive, and loving toward their family owners. They make excellent companion dogs as they have retained their ancient fox terrier instincts. The breed is affectionate and extremely loyal. Additionally, Amertoys are highly intelligent, trainable pets that can be taught to assist people with handicaps around the home. Others make exceptional hearing companions for the deaf. Amertoys, nonetheless, require firm yet gentle human leadership. Handlers have to demonstrate confident and consistent authority over them. Otherwise, these terriers will develop the Small Dog Syndrome which is expressed through various behavior problems.

Grooming

Toy Fox Terriers are relatively easy to groom. Their smooth coat only needs to be brushed on an occasional basis. Owners are advised to keep the breed’s nails short. Amertoys are considered to be minimal shedders.

Health Concerns

Toy Fox Terriers are a relatively healthy breed. As a matter of fact, they have an average lifespan of 13 to 14 years. Nevertheless, like any other canine, the breed is also prone to a few health issues. These include stifle, von Willbrand’s disease, and legg calve perthes. Some members of the line are allergic to corn, wheat, and beet pulp.

Best Environment

Toy Fox Terriers are generally suitable for apartment living. They are highly active indoors and will do just fine even without access to a yard. They breed are intolerable with cold weather so handlers have to ensure that the pet gets to wear a coat during winter. Amertoys are fairly active dogs that require daily walks. Play and a good romp in a wide secure place would also be great to meet their exercise needs.
