Leave it is arguably one of the most important cues you can teach your dog, both as part of a basic set of good dog manners and also from a safety standpoint. Teach leave it associated with snake visual, adding progressions of movement; teach olfactory (snake smell) leave it; teach auditory (rattle) leave it. Then combine all three. I taught dogs to then back up immediately, away from each stimulus until the behavior became habitual.
