In light of the recent tragic police shooting of 2-year old Rottweiler, Max, it’s important to remember that not all police officers would even consider aiming their weapon at a dog.

When Plattsburg police Officer Nick Shepherd stopped to help a dog whose leg was caught in a wire fence, he was simply doing his part as a self-proclaimed “dog lover.”

After freeing the dog with a pair of wire cutters and some elbow grease, he got the surprise of his life!

The video is shaky, but worth watching all the way to the end – you’ll love it!

I’m trying to get my blog to rank for some targeted keywords but
I’m not seeing very good gains. If you know of any please share.

Brought tears to my eyes, If I were the officer I think that I would have a hard time letting go of that guy. I would want to take him home with me. Hopefully the dog has a good home and good owners!

As a dog lover, I’m so pleased that an officer with empathy attended this call.

I wish ALL police cars carried a catch pole and ALL officers in ALL countries were trained in the proper use of them. Perhaps then they would use the pole to capture/restrain a dog instead of taking the easy option by pulling out their pistol and shooting it dead!

You could see by the dog’s tail he was happy about being rescued and not a threat. I’m also very happy to see a cop treating a dog so well.

    Good job!!

My friend’s dogs got out of their pen. Looked everywhere even the garage. Went to close the back end of her car there were both of the dogs each in one of the front seats…look ma we’re going on a ride. They wouldn’t get out until she took them for a ride.. Dogs love their rides.

CHAIN LINK FENCE TO GET OUT OF THE YARD. LUCKILY HE WAS LONG ENOUGH TO SUPPORT SOME OF HIS WEIGHT WITH HIS FRONT LEGS UNTIL I GOT HIM LOOSE.

PRECIOUS! Dogs know who to love and trust to love them. BTW I got 2 golden mixes from our local shelter – SAVING TWO LIVES. People get them as adorable puppies and don’t do homework to realize their: need of companionship, room to be active, growth to average 70lbs., common health issues. Over-breeders sell to pet stores, families move and abandon them, then dogs get dropped off on the street or taken to shelters. Save a life that’s already here and get love from a dog that appreciates you unconditionally.

It was really sweet, but what was the cop doing with that catcher in his hand? I hope he was going to take the dog to a Vet for treatment and not to a shelter.

If the dog is aggressive, you need a rabies pole, whether you are going to take the dog to the vet or not. Sometimes, a simple leash will not work if the dog is that aggressive, plus he wouldn’t know if that dog is vaccinated or not, and the pole just makes everything safer for everyone. It was there just in case. Coming from a vet tech and animal lover.

Good grief. Anyone who has extensive contact with animals, know that the catcher was for the officer’s protection. Not all scared and injured animals are as sweet as this wonderful dog was….at least not until they’re no longer scared and injured. Much better to have a catch pole and be able to treat the dog if he turned out to be too traumatized than to have to shoot the dog to protect himself. Better for the dog and the officer the way he did it. Luckily, he didn’t need the pole. The dog wasn’t too injured or scared. And a shelter is a much better alternative than anything else I can think of, if this dog doesn’t have an owner (yet) and the officer is unable to keep him. Shame on you for thinking either a catch pole OR a shelter is a bad idea.
