Temperament

Black and Tans, in general, are good-natured, loyal, and intelligent companions. They are quick to follow, and are very eager to please their owners. The breed is an alert, dedicated, and passionate worker. Black and Tans are typically gentle and friendly around people. To keep them from becoming overly protective and rather aloof with strangers, handlers have to succeed in becoming the true pack leader. The breed is oftentimes best suited with older, considerate children, though may also do well with younger ones given that the pet has been taught to respect the kid as above him in terms of pecking order. To prevent the Black and Tan Coonhounds from turning out to be high-strung, firm leadership as well as adequate exercise have to be provided. Additionally, the breed is not recommended to run off leash in an unsafe place. Proper socialization needs to be introduced to these dogs.

Grooming

Because Black and Tan dogs are average shedders, occasional brushing is necessary. Wiping the breed’s saliva off their mouth every after hearty meals or rigorous plays outside is also important to lessen their houndy odor. In addition, regular attention is highly advisable to keep the pooch free from infections.

Health Concerns

Some of the common health complications known to plague Black and Tan Coonhounds are weight gain, hip dysplasia, chronic heart disease, cataracts, and bleeding disorders. Nevertheless, with proper care, nutrition, and exercise, the breed can live past a decade with an average lifespan of 10 to 12 years.

Best Environment

Because of the breed’s strong hunting instincts, access to a secure, large yard is ideal. Black and Tans tend to readily take off once a certain trail captures their interest. They also tend to do well in a countryside living where their loud barks will not cause a rumpus. When it comes to exercise, the dogs would highly appreciate vigorous play sessions or regular physical exertions. Hiking, trailing, and jogging would make the pooch happy.
