The Clumber Spaniel is a breed of dog that originated in England. It is the largest of the Spaniel types. Clumber Spaniels belong to the sporting class that generally make amiably excellent companions. They are generally bred for the purpose of hunting. Clumber Spaniels typically have dense coats that are straight, flat, weather-resistant, and feathering around their ears, legs, and belly. The breed’s color usually come in predominantly white with a few lemon, orange, or brown markings surrounding their sleepy eyes, and even at the base of their tail.

Height and Weight

Both the male and the female members of the Clumber Spaniel breed share a weight of 55 to 85 lbs., and a height of 17 to 20 in measured at the withers.

Clumber Spaniels are generally described as gentle, affectionate, and loyal. They are dignified, though can be occasionally aloof with strangers. They are sometimes regarded as a sedate breed. They enjoy to curl up on the couch, sleep, and eat. Nevertheless, they have some habits that are quite disadvantageous. Clumber Spaniels tend to constantly shed, snore, and excessively drool. In addition to that, the breed has a mind of their own. They may sometimes not pay attention to their masters all the time, but they are amazing pets. Clumber puppies are specifically curious and playful. The breed also has a trophy mentality. More often than not, they have the incessant need to carry something. Unfortunately, this habit can lead to health problems as they might ingest items.

Regular grooming needs to be done to Clumbers, if possible, twice a week. Without regular brushing, their coat will mat. Also, their hair needs to be trimmed often to appear tidy. Checking their eyes every now and then is also important since their haws can become irritated. In addition to that, clumbers shed heavily.

Health Concerns

The members of the Clumber Spaniel breed are generally prone to quite a few eye problems. These include ectropion and entropion. Aside from that, the breed is also likely to suffer from spinal disc herniation, and canine hip dysplasia. Other health conditions that could plague the Clumbers breed are impacted anal sacs, heat sensitivity, and even temporary lameness among the Clumber puppies. Nevertheless, Clumbers have an average lifespan of 10 to 12 years.

Best Environment

The Clumber Spaniel breed thrive very well in apartment-living. They are not extremely active indoors so they can perform well even with a small yard. However, Clumbers require daily exercises carried out on a regular basis. Also, they need to interact with people, and living in a kennel is not recommended.
