Description

The Brittany, also called as Epagnaul Breton, is a medium-size breed of gun dog that originated in France. It belongs to the sporting breed group which generally makes pleasant, well-rounded escorts. Brittanies were initially bred for hunting, but have eventually developed as pointers, retrievers, and companions. Their flowing coat is of medium length, and usually comes in various shade combinations. These include orange and white, orange roan, liver and white, liver roan, tricolor, and black roan.

Height and Weight

Both the male and the female Brittanies share a common weight of 30 to 40 lbs. , and a height of 17.5 to 20.5 as measured at the withers.

Temperament

The Brittany breed was initially developed for the purpose of hunting. They are highly energetic, and they require at least one hour of vigorous exercise daily. Unsurprisingly, the breed makes ideal companions for active owners, as well as excellent working dogs in the field. In addition to that, Brittanies make admirable family pets. They are friendly, eager to please, and great with children. However, Brittanies have the tendency to become extremely shy if not socialized thoroughly. This makes socialization very crucial at their young age. Aside from that, the members of the Brittany sporting breed are known for their sweet nature and their capacity to be  easily trained. Nonetheless, they are generally recognized to be more sensitive when corrected as compared to the other hunting dog breeds. This makes harsh forms of correction to be oftentimes unnecessary.

Grooming

The Brittany’s downy coat generally take some effort to maintain. Although they are seasonal shedders, bathing them every month and brushing them twice a week is highly recommended to get rid of their dead hair as well as prevent it from matting. Trimming is also advisable especially if you are planning to show them.

Health

Members of the Brittany breed are generally robust. In fact, they can live for as long as 12-13 years. Besides, they rank well in terms of health. Nonetheless, there are still a few reported disease cases that attack the breed. Some of these health conditions include epilepsy, coronary heart disease, and lip-fold skin infections.

Best Environment

A spacious countryside farm house is basically the ideal living environment for this energetic breed. To make your Brittany pet happy, provide him or her a lot of legroom to fool around as well as a relentless human interaction. Since Brittanies are hyperactive, they require at least an hour everyday to get intensely physical. Vigorous running and a series of outdoor games will allow them to display their agility and hunting skills.
