Description

The Maltese is a small breed of dog that originated in Italy. It belongs to the Toy breed group which has been adored for their tiny size and endearing expression. Just like any other Toy breed, the Maltese also embody sheer charm. This particular breed of lapdog is basically bred for the purpose of companionship. Their single-layer coat is silky, and normally comes in white or pale ivory color.

Height and Weight

The male members of the Maltese breed commonly stand about 8 to 10 in, and weigh around 3 to 7 lbs. Bitches, on the other hand, are quite smaller with a height of 7.5 to 9 in at the withers, and a weight of 2 to 7 lbs.

The Maltese is a lively, spirited, and playful breed. They are loving, gentle, trusting, and devoted to their owners. The breed is also known to be highly intelligent and excellent at leaning several tricks. They are also observed to be bold and quick to sense the alarm in case of iffy noise. Maltese, in general, is among the classical companion pets. They are graceful and lovable. The breed has been known to do well around other dogs and animals. Maltese greatly enjoy playing outdoors. Some love to jump in puddles, though can be rather unmanageable to housebreak.  The breed also has the propensity to become picky eaters, and acquire the Small Dog Syndrome. They can become unstable, and jealous with visitors if overly pampered or overprotected.

Grooming

When it comes to grooming, the Maltese breed is quite high maintenance. Clipping and brushing its delicate hair is required twice a month. The hair around their bottom also needs to be trimmed regularly. The eyes and ears have to be cleaned on a regular basis to prevent infection. Since they tend to shed little to no hair at all, the breed is suitable for people with allergies.

Health Concerns

The Maltese breed is prone to sunburn. They are also likely to suffer from dental conditions, skin problems, eye issues, and respiratory ailments. Some may also be hard to feed with upset stomach. In addition, Maltese has the propensity to get chills and experience discomfort during hot weather. They also need to stay away from damp areas. Nevertheless, with proper nutrition and regular exercise, this sweet breed can live for as long as 12 to 15 years.

Best Environment

Maltese is best suited for apartment life. They thrive well in city environments. The breed tend to be extremely active indoors, and will do just fine even without a yard. Nonetheless, this type of dog needs a daily walk and an ample time to play. A good romp in a secure open area will be good for them.
