Description

The Manchester Terrier, also known as the English Toy Terrier, is a breed of smooth, compact dog that originated in England. It belongs to the terrier breed family which is notable for their distinct personality and outstanding hunting skills. Some members belong to the toy group which is adored for their small size and endearing expression. The breed has two known varieties: the standard and toy. Manchester Terriers have been bred to become rat and vermin hunters, and engaging companions. Their smooth, dense coat is short and tight, and comes in jet black and mahogany tan.

Height and Weight

The Standard Manchester Terriers normally stand a height of 15 to 16 in at the withers, and weigh 17 to 18 lbs. The Toy variant, on the other hand, has a typical height of 10 to 12 in, and a weight of 6 to 8 lbs.

Temperament

Manchester Terrier2

Manchester Terriers, in general, are agile, powerful, and high-spirited dogs. They are highly intelligent, cunning, and very eager to learn. The breed likes to please their master, and tends to learn rather quickly. These dogs have also been identified to be independent, loyal, and devoted toward their owners. Manchester Terriers are sporty, lively, alert, and vigilant. Because of their strong hunting instincts, they are rarely trusted with other small, non-canine pets. Early socialization as well as adequate exercise, however, is highly necessary to keep them stable-minded. The breed also needs a firm yet calm leader who can be confident and consistent in disciplining them.

Grooming

Members of the Manchester Terrier breed are easy to groom. They only require regular brushing. Keeping their ears clean and claws short, however, is highly necessary. The breed is an average shedder.

Health Concerns

Some of the common health complications associated with the breed include glaucoma and Von Willebrand’s disease. With proper attention, diet, and exercise, the breed can live for as long as 15 years.

Best Environment

Manchester Terriers are adaptable to both apartment living and city life. They need a lot of exercise, though can be easily met through daily walks. The breed loves human attention and companionship, and would not do well if left unattended for an extended period of time. Manchester Terriers can thrive in a rural environment, and are likely to prefer warm climates.
