Police Charge Pre-Teen With Animal Abuse For Killing a Puppy

In a troubling turn of events out of Saratoga Springs, New York, an 11-year-old girl was charged with two felonies for allegedly beating a puppy to death with her bare hands.

The girl, whose name was not released due to being prosecuted as a juvenile, was charged with aggravated animal cruelty and second-degree criminal mischief after an investigation by State Police. According to a report by The Post Star, the young girl repeatedly slammed the 13-week old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel against the floor and a bed post until the puppy was dead.

The pre-teen, a child in foster care, wanted her foster mother to give her a ride somewhere. When her foster mom said no, the girl killed the family’s pet.

Her aggravated animal cruelty charge is obvious, the second-degree criminal mischief charge relates to the dog belonging to another person and having a value of over $1,500. Can you imagine placing a dollar value on your family dog?

Because of her age, the case is being handled by Warren County Family Court. The courts will decide whether to place the foster child into a diversion program or to prosecute.

Either way, properly handling the situation is important, as a solid link between young children hurting animals and those same children being violent as they grow up is proven. For an 11-year old girl to commit such heinous acts is clearly an indication of deeper problems.

According to the New York Daily News,

A 2001 FBI report on youth violence found that the harming or killing of animals can serve as a “red flag” for identifying a child’s potential for violent behavior with other people — or shed light on the child’s personal victimization.

Warren County officials have declined to comment on the case.

This horrific event is certainly a result of underlying issues the foster child must harbor. But after reading all of these comments in response, I am not surprised that such events are occurring…many of the responses on here apparently come from people with anger issues, no morals, and no code of ethics. It is as if the internet has given people a wall to hide behind and say whatever they want with no regard to others. Is there no shame? The comments are as disgusting as the act the child committed. Wonder if the home she was removed from had language and thoughts shared like these….it would explain the actions. Think and be kind to one another. Anger and trash words accomplish nothing but response of the same.

I really hope she was prosecuted.
If someone did that to one of my pets I’d be in jail for murder.

BTW, seriously people, $1,500 on a dog? Why don’t you go to a shelter or a rescue and SAVE A LIFE for $0-300?
There’s rescues dedicated to particular breeds and PUREBRED adult and PUPPIES are dumped in shelters all the time!

Euthanize this kid. She is just going to move on to a human. She is useless in the world Thank god there wasn’t any small children in the foster home or it would of been them who wa beat to death.

Lets not mess about ,this kid should be “executed” not “Euthanized”, they mean two different things. A slow painful death in public perhaps, is the correct thing, and sends the best message to others.

Um…..that little girl needs to “go away” because I’m sure she grow up to be just A FANTASTIC ROLE MODEL of society! 14 kids, drug addicted with some recreational serial killing on the side. So nip it in the bud now!! I’ll do it for free if you tell me where to find her…Dexter for animals!!! How sick and evil to the core she must be to do that. EVIL! I hope that family “disciplined” her first before calling police. I have no room in this world for people of ANY age who abuse animals. they should all me eradicated, and not humanely!!!

I feel that yes everything she did was wrong but you are told about a childs temper etc… before you get a child. Who knows they may have not given all her all the love she needed!!!!! I feel for the family who lost the puppy but you also have to understand coming from me being a foster child myself. When they signed on as being a foster parent they signed up for the responsibility. She may have felt that puppy gets more ATTENTION ALL THE TIME THAN SHE DOES. You nor does anyone else know what was going through her mind. Im sure you kill bugs, ants, roaches all the time but they are living as well!!!! Im not taking up for her but put her in prision, and cages etc… really???? all these horrible things coming from adults Im sure… Grow up… john doer your wrong as well. This family is wrong there are better ways of handling the situation id say. Sometimes you never know how much youve hurt, or will miss something until its gone and its too late to say sorry.

I would bet money this girl has been sexually abused by someone. It is no excuse to hurt the puppy and kill it, but she is angry and the puppy bore the brunt of her anger. I don’t think it was not getting a ride that was the root of her anger, there is a much deeper issue here.

This is a very heartbreaking situation and I have to wonder if her foster mom saw her hurting the puppy. If I saw someone hurting any animal, I would be in jail regardless of who it was. This girl needs help in the worst way and also never be allowed to be around or own another animal. Deep mental issues need to be addressed as soon as they come out.

I hope the foster mother sent her back. This child belongs in an institution. Whatever happened to her or didn’t happen as she may just be sick and twisted via DNA has obviously made her a danger to anyone (anyone = human or animal for clarified for knuckle draggers). What an evil little monster she is. I can understand a child lashing out at a human but when they kill an animal that is even worse. Think about all you retards that believe human life is above all other life. she attacked something that was loving and unable to defend itself. If she was angry with Foster Mom, why didnt’ she attack her. Thank God I wasn’t the foster mom as I would be sitting in jail right now facing assault or even murder charges.

This child has some serious emotional problems. I believe it doesn’t matter what her problems are there is NO excuses of beating and killing this family pet.
This child should not be foster care, she knew exactly what she was doing. Her feeling got hurt because she did not get her way and this 11 year old lashed out at this family that opened their home to make a better life for her.
These kind of children become murders like Jeffery Dahmer.

Sad to say, but I don’t think this girl can be turned around. Only 11 and already so cruel? I’m afraid this is final. But of course the system has to go through the motions and spend good money on trying to rehabilitate her, because it would be “child abuse and exploitation” to give her a good walloping and have her do some honest work.

I’m getting really sick of the argument that these kids move on from harming animals to harming people. Is this the only reason the police takes these crimes seriously? What if they stopped at animals and never touched people – would it not be enough even then?

    • Theresa

      Aug 10, 2012 at 12:23 pm

    Jul 15, 2012 at 6:01 am

If she is like this at 13, I cannot imagine what she will be like in 10 years. My guess is that this child has probably copied violent behaviour from her biological parents or was abused. My guess is that the foster parents got the puppy for her so that she would have a loving companion. Her murder of the puppy is just a stepping stone away from doing the same with small children or even adults. She needs immediate psychological help.

  23. Steph

    Jul 15, 2012 at 5:28 am

this girl absolutely needs therapy, but behind locked doors!!! I don’t care how young she is! The fact that she could do this to someone’s family pet, is more than cruel. It’s vicious and the fact that she didn’t stop until the puppy was dead, tells me that she is somewhat dead inside herself! She has no feelings, emotions, empathy for the dog & family who were taking care of her! She is not to be trusted in public, until she can prove that she is remorseful and that this aggression is gone. If it is possible to “cure” her, I don’t know, but I wouldn’t want to see her in my neighborhood!!!

John when you get to be an old man how would you like people who feel its okay to beat pets to death, be caretakers for you. In your senile and helpless old age, you could be pretty testy for a cruel, impatient, hardhearted caregiver. The British Journal of Medicine in the 1990’s did a long and comprehensive study of the way animals are treated by various cultures. It was found conclusively that the way people treated animals corresponded strongly and predictably to the way those same people treated humans. Dahmer, Gacy, Bundy, Manson, Speck and many others of that calibre had histories of animal abuse and young adults and grew to treat living, breathing things as objects only.

I grew up in foster care and the first thing i thought about when reading this was what kind of things have been done to this kid Sure what she did was horrible unexcusibly so but, i bet what we read is not half of what really happened, 90% of foster homes that iv lived in where terrible abusive places

    • Theresa

      Aug 10, 2012 at 12:36 pm

Yes there are foster homes that are only into the money the State gives to them. I am sure the state does not know of the problem in some of these homes. Speaking out will weed out the bad. There are families that really do care for children in their care. I am sorry that you had to live in foster care and a bad one at that…..would it of been better for you to of stayed in juvenile hall??
No matter, killing a pet any pet is WRONG!

  26. Tia

    Jul 14, 2012 at 11:54 pm

Where were the foster parents when she was throwing this tantrum and committing murder? That’s a big question! Why didn’t anyone stop her? She clearly should be locked up, if you can kill an innocent animal that is too small and loving to fight back then you can kill anything and that doesn’t go away. She was probably doomed from the start thanks to her, and I use the term loosely, parents. Sad, sad story all around, but when it comes to a domesticated animal especially a house pet that person is sick, sick, sick.

This girl has all the warning signs of a serial killer. Showing no emotion, detachment from the situation, no remorse, ect. Violence starts with the animals then humans. She need a complete psychological evaluation and may not be able to be helped. Placing her in a controlled facility would probably be the best option. Sorry that the pet was killed but it could have also been a child or adult. There were probably other warning signs that the foster system missed. They do not always provide psychological help unless the foster family pushes for it. I am a foster parent and all the children need counseling to get through the trauma of being displaced.SHE NEEDS TO BE LOCKED UP JAIL OR MENTAL HOSPITAL.

This child knew exactly what she was doing, but apparently doesn’t have a bit of compassion or caring in her. An old fashioned ass-whipping first. Then scrubbing shelter kennels, and I mean down on the hands and knees cleaning, until she’s 18. AND, locked up during this time and not put back in foster care. She’s a serial killer in the making.

this kid is a sociopath. she has no conscience. I don’t care what her age is – she will never contribute anything of value to this world. animal abuse ALWAYS escalates. I know most people will disagree with me, but i believe in the death penalty for those who abuse animals, children and the elderly – people who abuse those that cannot defend themselves are a threat to society. They will not change. They will only get worse. I think someone needs to do to her EXACTLY what she did to the puppy – so she knows the fear and pain before she dies. I don’t care if she is 11 or 50.

What is really sad, is this will probably be another case of a slap on the wrist, b/c it’s JUST A DOG/CAT/BIRD/HAMSTER/FERRET/ETC…Look at what happened to Michael Vick, minimal jail time, rewarded with a football contract, now we have the other maggot Rapper Young Calicoe who was just busted by the FBI & DPD for being such a moron he actually took his own video of his “crib” and his fightin’ dogs & fightin’ cocks, all champun’s in da makin’ and posted it himself! I phoned the DPD, Michigan Humane Society, their Animal Abuse hotline after viewing the original video. I posted to all the rescue groups I know of & participate in on FB & then emailed the link to about 100 friends. I have watched the video of him being busted by the FBI & DPD about a dozen times now & laugh at each and every second of it. The sad thing is, this maggot has a young son, what is he learning!!! And the baby momma, who knows if they are married or not, she just stood by & let it happen, along with all his homeboys!!! Abuse should not be tolerated at all, be it animal, woman, child, or man! Until we, as citizens, unite and insist that our legislators, senators, congressmen/women pass bills that make punishment for animal abuse harsher with stiffer fines & mandatory jail sentencing, this type of heartbreaking event will continue.

What will happen to the fate of America’s children when their parents are too incompetent to raise them and when they are removed from their homes there is no one to take them in? Foster parents don’t get a fat check from the government like people seem to think. My daughter volunteers at church with a group that helps foster parents with tasks like babysitting or giving rides to appointments or taking the foster kids to their parental visits and things like that. The foster parents are usually amazing people that have to take in emotionally, and sometimes physically, disabled children. Most of the kids are just afraid and confused but some of them are violent. Not crazy violent like this one, but they will physically hit the foster parents and things like that. Why would a person take in someone else’s child only to be physically abused by them? Because they are kind-hearted people. But if the foster care system that tries its best to make sure the potential parents are “fit” doesn’t make some kind of assessment to make sure the children aren’t mentally unstable so they aren’t putting the foster family in danger, I could foresee a system where there will be less and less people willing to take in these children. It should be a two-way street – make sure the potential foster parents aren’t going to abuse the children and are going to be able to adequately care for them, and make sure the children aren’t raving lunatics that are going to harm the family! Screen the kids as well as the adults. No foster family should have to go through what this one went through! How did this child even end up in a foster home?

  37. Joani

    Jul 13, 2012 at 7:03 pm

John Doer: you are an idiot & should be tortured repeatedly for years until you die alone and stupid, you will never change, how sad.
The girl should be charged with a felony as criminal intent and spend years in a mental institution and only let out if they can prove she would never hurt another animal or person again…….however, that is very doubtful that she will not kill again. She will probably be slapped on the hands, let go, put in another foster home and grow up to me a terror on society and murder people.

The evidence is clear that serial killers frequently demonstrate a total lack of empathy with animals who are commonly their first victims. This horrifying act shows a complete lack of appropriate and measured response to not getting your own way and should serve as a red flag that this girl is DEEPLY troubled. Whatever caused her to act out in this way should be thoroughly evaluated and help, if possible, should be provided. If the family has other pets or younger children, she should be removed immediately from that home.

How pathetic. Shows what a selfish, self-centered person this 11 year old is. She didn’t get her way so she went and killed an innocent animal that had NOTHING to do with her and her foster parent. If I was that foster parent, I would get her out of my home ASAP before she kills one of them. These kids have no compassion for anything and wouldn’t blink an eye at killing a human being over something as stupid as not getting a ride. Put her in an institution and keep her there until she can be taught compassion and you can’t get everything you want in this world. You’re looking at our next generation of seriel killers….these young kids who have nothing better to do than kill an innocent animal.

      What an absurd response!
What message would you say it sends ? because one troubled ” okay, Little monster child” does something horrible..every child who had a less then savory background is a potential psycho?
Please , wake up and smell the felafel!
what would you have society do? feed them to the lions?
Get a life! I’m not making excuses for the “Little beast”But don’t attribute one child’s violent behavior to any/every one from a difficult or troubled background. talk about a generalization!

But to kill an innocent animal because you didn’t get your way, i saw throw the book at her, too bad she wasn’t older, maybe she could do prison time! This is one sick b*tch! Throw the book at her, wish we could swing her into a bed post until she died!

As for a dollar amount on the dog, until the laws are changed, this is how it goes. My 2 dogs don’t have a price on them..ok, what i purchased them for, but how can you put a price on pure love & devotion! you can’t, case closed, hope this crazy girl gets what’s coming to her!

This child needs to be in a hospital. The brutal act she carried out it a warning sign of a seriously ill person. This time it was an innocent puppy next time it could be a small child. There is something horribly wrong with her and she needs to be under full time observation by a medical staff that is able to diagnose and handle this kind of severe personality defect. I feel for the family that owned and loved that puppy.

Who knows what that poor girl has gone through in her short life to be in a foster home and do this to an innocent puppy. She sure does need help ASAP!! These violent acts on animals turn to violent acts on people if she is not helped now. Sure, I feel for the puppy and the foster family, but who knows how they were treating her to make her do such a heinous crime.

        Jul 13, 2012 at 7:27 pm

I don’t want to sound like I’m not compassionate because I do believe that girl needs help. She is obviously suffering from some sort of mental problems. Whether they were brought on by treatment from her biological parents, whether the foster family didn’t treat her well, or whether she just has some mental illness it still does not justify what she did. Acting out in that way is just plain sick and I don’t think trying to justify it by saying we don’t know how she was treated even makes any sense. It’s like apples and oranges. A lot of people have had some pretty screwed up lives and they don’t go around killing puppies or people. Don’t try to excuse her because that is what just enables that kind of behavior. In essence you are saying it’s ok that she did it if there was a reason. There is no justification for what she did not matter what.

My beloved pet just passed away, a week ago, from old age, she was 15 yrs. old. I carried her everywhere her last few days. She would look at me with such love. She left me her daughter who is 13 yrs. old and I will continue to take care of her the same way. Pets are like family. I had a rough life, that doesn’t mean I’m going to beat my pet. She needs to maybe work really hard and be isolated at night, some kind of camp, so she can appreciate the fact that someone not only took her in they trusted her with their dog! Otherwise she could very well take her anger out on a person next.

Ever hear of Mary Bell or watched the documentary “Child Of Rage?” She is old enough to know what she did was not only wrong, but sick. The children of today are not the children of yesterday.

Such a horrible death for a little puppy. Now, we have an 11 year old with anger issues which if not handled will only escalate…first a puppy and then she goes onto people? So sad all the way around…but this 11 yr old needs HELP!

    Jul 12, 2012 at 7:11 pm

Sorry to say, but prosecute that child to the fullest extent of the law. That poor pup did nothing to deserve the way it was killed. It didn’t bite the child, it didn’t have an accident in the house. That poor pup ended up in a home where he was a member of the family. Because the child killed a dog, she needs help??? Yes she does, but what would have happened if she killed her brother or sister? She would have been prosecuted! She will move on to people one day. Absolutely, the worst case of animal cruelty I have every heard. Horrible!

      Jul 13, 2012 at 11:28 pm

And don’t forget this was not her dog, she was in a foster home, taken in by the unbelievable goodness of strangers. It would not surprise me at all to find out she has become a murderer when she becomes an adult, if she doesn’t murder someone prior to adulthood. She has some terrible issues & it is going to take a lot of time & effort by professionals to deal with her and not the foster system!

Better step in…do not give her jail time…she needs major psycho analysis…or whatever it is the shrinks do…at any rate…keeping her incarcerated will only feed the beast and make it stronger…one wrong move and society will have another serial killer on their hands.

She should be put in a facility where she will get tested for violent tendancies , it is proven that this behavior is the beginning of people that abuse others and go to comitting very violent crimes , Girls especially usually love pups and this behavioor should show she need incarerated with the testing of her behavior done ASAP> GOD HELP HER !

john, this is why we are having the problem we are with animal abuse,if it can be done to an animal it can turn to people.she needs help now before it does get worse, even an 11 year old should not be able to do that morally, the poor pup.

      • Linda

        Jul 15, 2012 at 11:09 am

There are some real idiots on here, including John whats his name. This is a horrific situation! The little dog didn’t deserve this treatment. If a human baby had been in the house, would this child had done that to him? It’s possible. While this child does need to punished for what she has done, it is clear she has mental problems that need to be addressed. Ignoring that is not doing her any favors or anyone else. If you do your research, alot of serial killers hurt animals when they were children. Maybe she wouldn’t grow up to be a serial killer, but she would grow up and become a mother. She does need to be put into an in-patient type facility for long term mental health treatment.

There is no excuse for this sick behavior other than that this girl is a psychopath. I wish she would be charged as an adult. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppies are dolls, they are the sweetest, cutest, loving puppies. For someone to kill a little puppy like that simply is evil. She has anger issues and has zero empathy towards hurting helpless living beings. Evil, simply evil.

Why hasn’t this comment been pulled or edited?
Your comment is completely disgusting..& to the person who wrote it..
Why do you have to bring your violent sexual thoughts/issues to a comment board that is protesting violence against a helpless animal?
        It is rather gross/vulgar/inappropriate!
I’m sure you can find a way to express your anger in a way that is a little more constructive…
Hmmm. How about; Wow, it makes me so angry to hear this!
or, What a sad, sick, young person..Obviously mentally ill, and, as someone pointed out..children/people who kill “unless it’s in self defense..usually
have serious mental health issues which {without treatment} often get worse.

You’re an effing idiot. it clearly states that the child was being fostered. the dog was a) not her’s and b) a breed of dog that is absolutley the sweetest breed on earth and c)a puppy. She beat the puppy to death because she was mad at her foster mother. does that mean any guest in your home should be able to beat your family pet to death because you invited them into your home? of course not. clearly the girl has some serious mental issues. your support in a brutal act shows you may share them. either act like you have some sense or do everyone a favor and keep your mouth shut.

How about providing the child with a little more love and compassion and work with her to resolve her issues. (EDITED) the damn dog and the police. It is none of the legal systems damn business. What ever people do in their homes is there own responsibility. All of you helpless people need to learn to take care of your own damn problems.

      • Dawn

        Jul 13, 2012 at 8:33 am

She beat the dog because she didn’t get her way. So johndosher… you’re saying they should have left the puppy there, and taken her where SHE wanted to go.
Did you miss the part where it said SHE WAS IN FOSTER CARE!!!!! so the family whose dog was killed WAS NOT HER PARENTS!! where th eheck are THEY that she is in foster care?
I didn’t realize telling a kid NO was not part of LOVE!!!! Fir all we know she had been given love, and understanding. and retaliated by doing this. BIG BRIDGE CRIME happened here.
But th enext time she wants her way, you’re more than welcome to take her in and let her do WHATEVER she wants, with “your love” because obviously the rest of us are idiots.
For her to be able to take the puppy (13 wks old.. so MAYBE 5 pounds to 7 pounds AT BEST) and repeatedly slam it until it died, with NO regard for the screams and yelps the puppy let out before dying??!!! she had NO REMORSE or COMPASSION to the puppy. I guess my other question is… what did the puppy do to cause the FOSTER mom to take a stance and say “No, Im not going not cart your behind everywhere because you think i should!” therefore puppy must die!!!
Here’s thought John Dosher… why don’t YOU go to court, file paper work, and offer to be the kid’s guardian?!!

      • Mary

        Jul 13, 2012 at 7:20 pm

John Doer – what the heck set you off that you come out of the gate with profanity and, frankly, insanity? Maybe they should reserve a pair of padded cells, one for her and one for you because you obviously have some deep emotional problems yourself. Did your mother not love you enough? Is that the reason that you are so aggressive and have such uncontrolled anger? You sound like a prime candidate for some kind of psychological study but before that happens I think it would be beneficial to society if you were institutionalized and medicated before you hurt someone. If you are this angry and aggressive to a complete stranger that made an innocent comment I can’t even imaging what you would be like in a face to face confrontation. You need to calm down. There was absolutely no reason for you to attack that person the way you did. And by the way, even if the dog belonged to her she did NOT have to right to kill it. You are so ignorant it makes me sick. NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO HARM ANY LIVING CREATURE. However if you feel people should be able to beat something to death, may I suggest you volunteer. Just from your ignorant posts I have to believe the world would not suffer any loss. My dog has more intelligence than you display so I believe if I had to choose between the life of a dog and the life of a psycho like you, I would choose the dog.

        Jul 13, 2012 at 7:57 pm

You don’t know what you are talking about. Chances are this is a very mentally sick child. If a child will kill an animal it is not a far fetched concept to grow older and kill these things called humans. I know I work with children daily and see all types of children that do things that are not correct. Parents do not often know what to do. The justice system needs to step in and put some tough love on this child or lose her forever. I know I have seen this before and most parents can’t handle it. The child needs to learn the world does not let you off just because you are a kid. You pay for your wrongs. We are too soft on young people and then they continue in lives of crime. I see this every day where I live. So let’s get tough and do the right thing for this girl.

See heres the thing… to you.. # 1 your an (edited)!!!! #2– my thoughts are– someone needs to show that kid… what its like and what that dog felt!!! so I would actually knock her against the bedpost.. like she did that dog!!! and I have no problem.. beating her either!!!! anyone who abuses.. women.. and animals.. IN MY BOOK… SHOULD BE SHOT!!!!!!!! PLAIN AND SIMPLE!!! AND I HAVE NO PROBLEM DOING IT!!!!!!! I have kids… and I have animals.. you touch either one of them.. you better hide your ass real quick!!!! I am from NY.. we do not take abuse lightly!!!!

Perhaps you should take your own advice John and take care of YOUR OWN PROBLEMS, which are very evident to everyone who has made intelligent comments on this barbaric crime. Let me provide you with a little bit of the knowledge I have gained…many people who abuse animals then go on & abuse people, murder them & often become serial killers. If you have children, I would watch my back, b/c you obviously don’t think this is an issue.

Apparently John Doer has some mental issues him or herself. When humans start things like this it is a clear sign of mental issues, and tend to become serious criminals. This child needs to get mental help along with somehow paying for this crime. Again, to the John Doer person, you are obviously ignorant and need to to your homework. If you do not like what people are saying then do not comment.

      • Theresa

        Jul 14, 2012 at 5:49 pm

@ John doer – “whatever people do in their homes is there (their) own responsibility”? And it is none of the legal system’s or the police’s business? I guess that means people can murder, rape, sell drugs, take drugs, plunder, pillage, or do whatever it is they want to do in their own homes, as long as they take care of it themselves? No police, no court systems, no rules. I believe that has already been tried about 150 years ago or so, it didn’t work then & it won’t work now. Humans have proven that their behavior needs to be monitored & corrected if necessary. You, John doer need some help also.
My heart goes out to this family for their loss & for that little girl because she is obviously in need of some intense psychological help. Sleep in peace, little puppy you did nothing to deserve such a horrible fate!
