Temperament

Amertoys, in general, are active, tough, and highly intelligent dogs. In fact, some members have been trained for assisting handicapped people at home. They are pleasant, curious, and sensitive, though can become rather stubborn when proper human leadership is lacking. The breed has also been identified to be inquisitive, alert, and quick. Nonetheless, their innate terrier hunting instincts make them quite untrustworthy around small non-canine animals. Additionally, Amertoys have an exceptional hearing ability; making them excellent companions for the deaf. The breed is also known to be very loyal and affectionate toward their family owners.

Grooming

Although Amertoys do not shed heavily, they tend to lose hair the whole year round. They need occasional brushing and trimming to keep their coat in good condition. Regular vacuuming may also be necessary.

Health Concerns

Members of the Toy Fox Terrier breed are generally healthy. They have an average lifespan of 13 to 14 years. Nevertheless, there are some health complications associated with the breed. These include luxating patella, hypothyroidism, stifle, Legg Perthes Calves disease, and goiter.

Best Environment

Because of Amertoys’ small size, space is rarely an issue. What the breed needs is a dwelling with fairly warm environment. They also require a lot of gentle and intelligent human interaction. They are usually uneasy in cold living spaces and uneventful homes with children. Owners are advised to pamper their Amertoy pet with toys, and ensure that their lawns are safely fenced. Short walks and some indoor games are especially great for these little fellows.
