Right behind a dog’s ability to smell, hearing is one of their highest and most reliable senses. This is just one of the reasons we feel a little more safe having them around!
All dog breeds have a strong sense of hearing but there are a few breeds that rise above others. This article lists those breeds and tells you a little bit about them!
Dog Breeds with the Best Hearing
Some characteristics of a model hearing dog include naturally attentive to sound, friendly and people-oriented, confident but not dominant, steady temperament, and calm in crowds according to the American Kennel Club. These are four dogs that exemplify those:
- Labrador Retrievers: Not only are labs great pets, but their hearing is out of this world! They are often used as service dogs because of their keen ears. They are also a great sized pup.
- Golden Retrievers: These big dogs can hear! They are often used and trained as hunting dogs because of their great retrieving skills.
- Poodles: This one can’t be too surprising, poodles do love being the best and their hearing definitely is… Their floppy ears work hard.
- Cocker Spaniels: With these huge ears there is no shock they can hear like a champ! These medium sized dogs are a great family pet.
Reasons to Have One of These Dogs
There can be many advantages to owning a dog with superior hearing. One of the largest being service dogs. A service animal is any dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability, including a physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or other mental disability. What better way to get some help than by a furry friend?
Another great reason to get a dog with superb hearing is protection. A lot of us feel safer in general when we have a dog around. Knowing they will pick up on any unusual sound just adds on to our sense of serenity when we are feeling a little eerie. With one of these dogs, you can sleep soundly knowing they have your back!
Healthy Hearing Heros
A dog can be a person’s best friend and protection. When deciding on what dog will be best for you and your family’s needs, consider the four dogs above. Also, don’t forget to use Earwax PET to keep their ears in tip top shape!
