A dog missing from his Houston, Texas home for more than 2 months was finally found – over a thousand miles from home in Midland, Michigan!

Dog Missing

Oreo disappeared from his Houston home just before Hurricane Harvey made landfall in late August. The family’s search for Orea turned up zero leads and trouble finding the missing boy was compounded by the aftermath of the record-breaking hurricane.

But, 2 months later, Oreo made an incredible reappearance – more than 1,000 miles away from home in Midland, Michigan!

Oreo was found wandering the streets of Midland where he was picked up by a good Samaritan, concerned that he’d be struck by a car. He was brought to the Midland County Humane Society where volunteers scanned him for a microchip.

“We don’t know how the dog ended up here, she has no clue how the dog ended up here, we wish he could tell us but he’s not talking,” Diane Winkler, the volunteer coordinator for the Humane Society of Midland County told WEYI.

Oreo’s microchip was registered to an owner several states away in Texas.

“We contacted the person, still a working number, got a hold of her, and she was missing her dog for 2 to 3 months, so she was really grateful to hear from us, I think her words were something like ‘my baby!,'” said Winkler.

After an outpouring of offers of support, the Humane Society found a volunteer willing to fly Oreo back to Texas for the warm welcome home. He’ll be reunited with his family on Friday.

Remember, while you never expect your dog to disappear, a microchip – that’s registered and kept up-to-date with current contact information – just might be his ticket home.
