As part of a larger initiative to educate dog owners on proper nutrition, effective training, and other ways to raise a happy and healthy dog, the Dogington Post is reviewing toys, foods, treats, rescue organizations, and dog-loving celebrities in our first annual Dogington Post Awards Program!
Each week, we’ll present the nominees in a particular category. And, YOU, our readers, will have an opportunity to weigh-in on your favorites, to help us choose a winner!
Nominees from each category for the Dogington Post Award have been selected based on strict criteria including dedication to animal welfare, educating the public on responsible pet ownership, and nationwide initiatives to end the homelessness of animals.
This week, we’re presenting the nominees for Best Dog-Loving Celebrity in 2012!
Dogington Post’s Best Dog Loving Celebrity nominees are:
1. Miranda Lambert
The Country Music Association’s (CMA) Female Performer of the Year, Miranda Lambert, is using her amazing voice for more than just belting out number one hits. She’s using her voice to speak for dogs!
The country star and her hubby, fellow country crooner Blake Shelton, share their Oklahoma home with 6 rescue dogs lucky enough to wander onto their property and into their lives. But, Lambert’s dedication to dog rescue certainly doesn’t end there! Through the non-profit organization, MuttNation Foundation, that she started in 2009, Miranda Lambert is directly involved in building animal shelters, increasing pet adoption and rescue, encouraging responsible pet ownership, rehabilitating sick or unsocialized animals, funding spay and neuter programs, reducing euthanasia of adoptable dogs, and training dogs for therapy and dogs-in-prison programs.
Miranda says of her love for dogs, “They don’t care that I’m Miranda Lambert, they just care that I’m Mom.” She understands the value of the unconditional love that dogs provide and says it helps keep her grounded, despite fame and fortune.
2. Ellen DeGeneres
Each week on her television show and website, the hilarious talk show host and animal advocate, Ellen DeGeneres, showcases adoptable pets, interviews other dog-loving celebrities, and shares funny videos of goofy pets – all in the name of bringing awareness to dog and cat rescue, shedding light on dog homelessness, and encouraging fans to open their homes and hearts to dogs.
Helping homeless pets find their forever homes is a cause close to Ellen DeGeneres’ heart. “Pet adoption is something I’m extremely passionate about. I believe that by working together, we can find good homes for the millions of homeless and abandoned pets out there,” she has said.
Co-owner of Halo Pet Foods and the Halo Pet Foundation, DeGeneres strives to provide pets with happier, healthier, longer lives by providing the best quality dog and cat foods available. Now partnered with FreeKibble.com, Ellen and Halo provide healthy foods to shelter dogs around the nation, ultimately making them healthier, happier, and more adoptable!
3. Miley Cyrus
In 2012 alone, the 20-year old singer/actress adopted 5 homeless dogs. With a fan-base in the millions, Miley Cyrus has brought astounding attention to animal rescue and adoption of shelter dogs.
Through her impressive fan following, Cyrus has donated tens of thousands of dollars to animal rescue. For her 20th birthday, the singer asked over 10-million friends and fans to donate to her favorite rescue organization, Saving SPOT! Dog Rescue in lieu of birthday gifts.
Through sheer volume of devoted fans and a voice that reaches millions, Miley Cyrus and her own love of dogs has impacted the lives of countless others. Simply by giving homeless dogs a voice and encouraging rescue, Miley has made a difference.
